Market Snapshot: New Zealand Start-Up Directors Remuneration

This document summarises our best effort at obtaining a market ‘pulse’ for what start-up directors are being compensated in New Zealand. The findings have been drawn from data collected from over 100 local start-up directors, submitted in 2024 in response to a questionnaire posted on LinkedIn by OnBoard.

The project has been an effort between OnBoard and many individuals in the New Zealand start-up ecosystem. A special thanks to our sponsors DLA Piper, New Zealand Growth Capital Partners and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

The report contains:

  • Average remuneration split by director position and company stage,

  • Composition of remuneration (between shares and cash)

  • Board practices, including the average number of meetings, hours spent per annum, inferred hourly rates, and the number of directorships held.

  • Typical share option and director’s Insurance arrangements.
